Submitting your Dissertation

Formal requirements: the Dissertation’s required length is 300.000-500.000 characters including spaces and footnotes but excluding the dissertation’s reference list. Use Times New Roman 12, with 1.5 spacing and indented paragraphs. Sources should be referenced using the Chicago’s Manual of Style‘s author-date documenting system (check it out in the IEAS Style Sheet, too).

Note: Students are obliged to submit their PhD dissertation within a period of three years after passing the comprehensive examination. If you are uncertain about the exact date of your comprehensive examination, please contact the administrator of Doctoral Affairs at the Faculty of Arts.

After you have passed your internal defense (“házi védés”), please contact the administrator of Doctoral Affairs for an application form, a detailed protocol on uploading your dissertation and related documentation to the website of the Klebersberg Library of the University of Szeged. The three steps of submitting your PhD dissertation are:

1) Send the following documents in PDF format to the administrator of Doctoral Affairs at the at the Dean’s Office: your dissertation, the thesis résumé booklets (one in English, one in Hungarian), List of Publications (as registered in MTMT), Foreign Language Certificates, and a 1 page long CV in third person narrative form.

2) Submit in hard copies to the administrator of Doctoral Affairs at the Dean’s Office:

  • the filled in, dated and signed application form
  • 1 printed copy of your dissertation (1 hard-cover bound copy which must be one side printed document)
  • 1 printed copy of the Thesis Résumé Booklet in English (double side printed)
  • 1 printed copy of Thesis Résumé Booklet in Hungarian (double side printed)
The Thesis Résumé Booklet (Tézisfüzet) includes the table of contents and a brief outline of your Dissertation in 20.000-40.000 characters excluding spaces and footnotes, with the addition of your list of publications. The Thesis Résumé Booklet must be provided in English (the language of the program), and a succinct Hungarian version of merely 2000 characters (cc 1 page abstract). These – the English and the Hungarian version – can be bound and printed as a single booklet for the hard copy submission but should be uploaded as separate documents on the online repository.

3) Upload to Szeged University’s Repository of Dissertations an electronic copy of your dissertation and thesis résumé booklet in PDF format. The uploaded documents must correspond with the ones you have emailed to the administrator of Doctoral Affairs.

Please, notify your supervisor(s) and the Director of the Doctoral Programme when you accomplish all of the above.
