The Department of American Civilization at Brown University enjoys a reputation as a premier interdisciplinary graduate program and has long been committed to an international practice of American Studies, reflected in our faculty research, graduate training and collaboration with international faculty. We recognize that excellent scholarship and first-rate graduate training in American Studies is being done at many universities around the world. With that in mind, we’ve inaugurated a Masters program for students of American society and culture who want to spend a year doing intensive coursework and research in the United States. A Masters program with the interests and needs of international students at its center brings to our department important new scholarly and pedagogical insights and perspectives and is a logical step forward in our department’s commitment to developing a lively transnational practice.
Students enrolled in the MA in American Civilization program are fully integrated into the department’s graduate curriculum and are free to enroll in classes across the entire university. Consonant with our undergraduate and doctoral programs, the MA program in American Civilization combines broad interdisciplinary training with focused attention to individually defined research interests. With our department’s strong array of lecture courses and seminars, including those in our Public Humanities program, students will have no trouble devising a coherent curriculum. Students already enrolled in a graduate program will be able to transfer graduate credits towards a degree at Brown. While our program does not have a thesis requirement, some students may wish to begin research projects in the United States during their year at Brown. In addition, students will have an option to enroll in a supervised internship or practicum with a government agency or non-profit organization. We believe that this rigor and flexibility will allow international students to gain a combination of advanced classroom, research and work experience in the US best suited to their needs.
