Date: 15–16 May 2026

On 15–16 May 2026, the annual international conference of the Angela Carter Society will take place in Szeged, co-organised by the Institute of English and American Studies at the University of Szeged and the University of the West of England, Bristol, focusing on the theme Angela Carter and Nature:“Penetrating to the Heart of the Forest” from an Ecocritical Perspective. Angela Carter is a contemporary British woman writer, widely known for her magical realist novels, feminist fairy-tale rewritings, and postmodern demythologising projects. The conference seeks to explore the unjustly neglected ecocritical, zoopoetic, and posthuman philosophical dimensions of her rich oeuvre. The plenary speakers are internationally distinguished scholars: Marie Mulvey-Roberts will focus on eco-Gothic body fluids, Anna Watz on talking beasts and live flowers, and Caleb Sivyer Ferrari on dystopic spatialities. A companion event to the conference is Bestiarium Facultatis, an exhibition by students of the Department of Drawing and Art History at the Institute of Art, JGYPK, University of Szeged, featuring works created in response to the theme of the “bestiary,” The exhibition will be on view at the Interactive Natural Science Knowledge Centre (Boldogasszony sgt 6) until the end of June.
